The view from the kayak. I've been tracking a few turtles this season. Hopefully we will have traps in the water next week!

Proper footwear for turtle trapping.

First Turtles!

Red-eared sliders and painted turtles.

First catch of the season! The freshman bio class had their field trip to John Heinz yesterday. We caught some turtles for them. Several other groups of people stopped by to ask questions as well.

Home again!

I'm back home in Pennsylvania. Yesterday the dog got several walks in the woods to find a grove of Showy Orchis. Here are some of the pictures. Near these plants and mixed in among them were many yellow morrells. We harvested a few and ate them this morning with eggs. Also in this section of woods are a great number of beech trees. There were many tulip poplars at one point but they were cut and sold in the 1960's. Last week (in the rain) we found yellow lady slippers on a nearby hillside in the woods.

Above: Three beautiful pictures of Showy Orchis.

Last Post for a while

I'm switching to a travel blog and felt the need to keep it separate from this one. If you are looking for updates, I'll be at threeandahalfdegreesnorth.blogspot.com from Thursday on. In the mean time, I sucumbed to entertainment value and bought flipflops (on sale for $10 down from almost $40) with bottle openers in the soles. I think they were on sale because people thought, "But I wear shoes to protect my feet from the street, why would I then use the street to open my beer?" Anyway, here is a series of action shots.

Also, if you don't yet own any T-shirts with turtles on them, you can order some (designed by our field team this summer, drawn by Kelly with computer work by me) at either of these stores.

New Blog!

I finally made a blog for the Bioko trip. It is at http://threeandahalfdegreesnorth.blogspot.com/. There is ongoing construction at the DAC (Drexel Athletic Center) and we trapped for two days at JHNWR but only caught a few painted turtles. Here are the pics.
